Had to pay $29 just to service my iPhone (2nd time related to hardware issue)....I guess the 1 year warranty isn't "Free". Anyone able to get around it?

Actually, your the first person I have heard of that had to pay anything.
I have had my phone replace 4 times now (3 for battery related issues - my current phone has awesome battery life, and one for OS issues) and I have yet to pay anything for service. I do know that the warranty is more geared at the OS, but battery is a hardware thing, and again, I paid nothing for a swap.
Where did you take your phone for service? If it was an Apple store, I would call and complain

My phone was replaced free of all charges when I had a problem. Did you call Apple or go to the store?

Thanks for the info! I actually called Apple iPhone (1-800-My-iphone) to setup the service. They will send me a temporary iPhone (via UPS or Fedex) while I repackage mine in the same box and send it to them to fix/replace. I remember fixing my TREO 700 with no service fee while they provided a temporary TREO in the meantime.

So....if I go to the Apple Store they will not charge anything? Do they give you a temporary replacement while they ship yours for service? Just weighing my options....TIA!

That's what the 29 was for. Your rental fee for a temp phone.
Yes, it's friggin' bogus.

that explains it - it's $29 to get a replacement iPhone to use while yours is being evaluate/repaired. if you had not gotten a temporary replacement, the entire repair would have been free...

EDIT: Hawk beat me to it!

Thanks Guys. I guess the first time they gave me the temp phone for free of charge....why not the 2nd or 3rd time when it's hardware related issues. You would think if it's hardware related or anything that goes wrong with the phone they would have the courtesy of providing the temp phone for free under the warranty. Good businesss practice...IMO. All they have to do is charge your credit card if you don't return the temp phone. Sorry...just have to vent eventhough it's only $29.

have you tried just going to an Apple store? They usually just swap a defective phone for a refurb...

I'm at college and the nearest Apple store to me is over an hour away so I didn't want to drive out there to get my phone fixed. I called Apple and they sent me the loaner phone and I did the same deal as you with shipping mine back to them, but I wasn't charged a thing. I have had my phone replaced twice and paid nothing so far. I would def complain to Apple if I were you.

I would look the phone over for any scratches, nicks, ect., but it should be perfect. Same internally. Of course refurbs are prone the problems like any other phone. There are members here that have had phones replaced 3,4 or more times. Overall though, this one should be just fine.

my understanding is they replace the casing and battery. I've not heard this from anyone official, though.

A refurb. is just what it says. If the phone had a dead pix. it is fixed. Whatever was wrong with the phone is fixed if possible. Otherwise, they don't become refurbs.:)

My wife is on her 8th 9th should be here tomorrow but thats because i called and bitched and moaned and finally got them to upgrade my wifes iPhone from a 4gig to an 8gig

We have had several loaners and never paid for one. They told me that it would be 29bucks that first time and i laughed at the dude and told him like hell it will. The phone was 1day old and they were gonna charge me ? yeah right and that was the 3rd one in 2 days at that

right.. i guess i was a little unclear. I meant that in addition to fixing whatever the problem was, they also replace the casing and battery.

OK. I didn't know the casing was replaced, but makes sense if you think about it. Always learning something on this forum.

like i said, though, that's only what i've heard from unofficial sources, so who knows.

anyway, if they were refub'ing them properly, then they should replace those things.

I went and replaced mine and they gave me a regular 1.1.3 OTB (from a white box)

the serial wasn't 5K.

it was 88804.

its perfect. screens brighter, battery's not different... but what I love is it IS LOUD AS crap. and this was before the surgery. now I did it and it is just scary loud. pity I don't have my Nokia 6151 to compare the volume (the 6151 was the loudes phone I had ever really seen/owned).

idk, I don't think they do refurbs anymore..

They exclusively to refurbs in the store right since new phone are seriously back ordered. They replaced mine with a refurb. The refurb has some usage on the chrome bezel (which scratches by merely looking at it), but otherwise okay. Screen did not seem as crisp. I noticed that there was some serious gaps in the headphone jack where I could clearly see into the phone, allowing dust and dirt to get in to damage the accelaromator and behind the touch screen. After much crazy non-sense with a product specialist, customer relations is sending be a new in box 16 gb phone. My original phone was sent in to AppleCare and I got a loaner, they wanted $30, but I refused and they gave it to me for free. They damaged my phone during the repair (or lack thereof) and told me to go in and get a refurb. There are no new phones in the Apple Stores in New York. Your loaner is only good for 7 days or they will charge your credit card for the full amount of the phone. Here is the real bullshit: when they swap out your phone with a refurb, they give you a receipt that states that the value of the refurbished phone is $250.00. They don't even sell their refurbs for that cheap, only AT&T does.
