This technique is also useful for existing customers who are almost qualified for a phone upgrade. Even though you renewed a 2 year contract with AT&T to get the iPhone, the time that you can get the reduced price on a phone hasn't changed. I will be eligible to purchase a reduced price phone in August or September and I will do that, unlock the phone, then sell it on Ebay.

That goes back to where people where talking about that a 2 year contract was required for everyone and no one believed it didn't apply to current customers. Not only did I get 2 new phones right before the iPhone, but I still have a line I can upgrade and there was no contract extensions. I am saving the last upgrade for Christmas.

So, for the people that don't have At&t and locking to buy an iPhone get a new Phone and then Purchase an iPhone. If you buy the iPhone first, you will be locked in a 2 year contract.
