It's been purple since the first beta, I think, maybe the second.

Make sure you are on beta 3, which is 7A280f. The 1st has expired and the 2nd will expire shortly but may not allow you to upgrade to beta 2 anymore(purple screen means you are on an expired beta). During my update process the purple restore screen came up twice, first during the install of the update and then after my phone turned on to be ready to use(it did give the emergency option here). I just let iTunes do it's thing and neither stayed up for more than a few seconds. Since it doesn't seem to have gone away I would say to disconnect then reconnect to iTunes or to put it into restore mode and try it again.

I don't think that's right. I've had it since the day I updated to beta v1. It can't possibly mean an expired beta.

Yes my phone finishes restoring in recovery mode also. Just hold the home button and power button for 15 seconds or till you get the Apple loading up screen and let it load up.

Purple screen

I was listening to music this morning on my 3G on the 3.0 Beta 2 firmware and it suddenly went to the purple screen, no service and slide for emergency.

I tried to update to beta 3 and it fails during the update because of unknown error (code 14). I've tried following guides here, it is already in restore mode since the first failed firmware update but have rebooted several times and still no luck.

I am currently re-installing the beta 2.0 firmware and it has gotten farther along in the process, installs verifies, and then restoring firmware and now finished installing.

I will re-try upgrading to the beta 3 and see if it works now.

Yeah I got a purple screen a well... I assumed that was because it was simply a beta FW.

Can anyone else comment on the purple background being related to expired FW? I've literally just updated to 3.0 beta 2days ago.

Updating to beta 2 probably wasn't a smart idea since beta 3 is out and from what I have read especially about last years 2.0 betas, is that once expired you will see that purple screen. And since beta 3 is out it probably won't allow new beta 2's anymore.

I was never on 2.0 betas but I heard that most of those were nightmares. The 3.0 betas especially for everything that was added are wonderful and I am looking forward to how the final release turns out.

well I need help. I cannot install the 2.2.1 cause it crashes (probably because not backwards compatible) and I cannot install 7a280f because it crashes during software install saying error 14 at like 95% complete. It will let me reinstall the 7a259 all I want, but obviously I get a purple screen.

I had 7a259, activated and working for like 2-3 weeks and then it just suddenly expired and now won't upgrade :(

any advice guys?

You can't go back to 2.2.1 as your locked to 3.0 because you've given you UDID to a dev.

the purple screen is ok. Just restore to it as normal!

I had purple screen and have had no problems whatsoever apart from the buggy FW etc...

Any problems give me a shout!

any problems? lol my iPhone is an iBrick atm. LIke I said, the only firmware that will install for me is 7a259g, which is obviously expired. I cannot update to 7a280f because it fails with error code 14. I've searched google for the past few hours ans no solutions have been brought my way.

Usually it seems to do better with updating on windows, but odd that you are having problems. Put beta 2 on and where you get the purple screen, with the purple screen click shift + update and choose the beta 3 ipsw. If that won't get it working put it into restore mode and when you connect it and it shows up in iTunes as a "phone in restore mode" then click shift + restore and choose the beta 3.
