After searching cingular on google maps and coming up with 29,890 results. I then divided 3,000,000 by 29,890 and got around 100. And after calling the cingular/AT&T stores around here, only one said they would be carrying it. So taking that into perspective, I believe that there will be plenty to go around :) At least around here lol
The 2000 is based on the number of Apple stores plus the number of corporate ATT stores. The larger number would represent the additional stores which would not be selling the iPhone on June 29. At least that's what I think I've gleaned from here. :)

I'm sure this has been asked before, but when I go to the AT&T website and search for local stores, how do I tell which are corporate and which are not?

It has already been said that it will be a total of 2,000 stores(about 1800 Att and 200 Apple stores) will be getting them.

ones that say authorized retailers vs. cingular owned store. the cingular owned store is the corporate one (it tells you in the desrciption of the store near the address
