Apple is launching the 3G iPhone in India today at a ridiculous price of $840 for the 16 GB and $720 for the 8GB version. To top it off, India still does not have 3G networks so users will still be on EDGE and Gprs.

How much is that in Indian Currency? (sorry if this is an ignorant question)

Our dollar is worth very little right now, so it's hard to make that comparison. If you compare what we paid in Indian Currency what would it come out to be?

yahoo shows 1 american dollar = 43.40 Indian Rupee.
So iPhone will cost them somewhere around 36000 in rupee. Which i don't think is that bad.. I remember N95 hit India for around 35,000.

Don't be so DOWN!... We have 3G just for the sake of it... You should take a look at AT&T 3G coverage..

Believe me, that's crazy expensive in India. In terms of average income, it's like an iPhone costing $2000 here.

There won't be any lines. I bet they sell a few hundred throughout the country.

Not to mention, you'd never want to show your phone publicly thereafter. You'd get mugged before you could put it to your ear.

They planned to open the stores at midnight expecting a big rush but hardly anyone showed up. :laugh2:
