Numerous people have noticed that specifications from the Apple website state that the 3G iPhone may be limited to 1.4Mbps. This is very unusual as other phones that are 3G enabled post much higher download rates...One such example is the Motorola Q which is able to download at 3.6 Mbps...Also, HSDPA cards are able to download data at 7.2 Mbps.

Didn't Apple only claim the new phone to be 2.8x faster or something like that? That would put it under 500Kbps.

I think those were just real-world examples of certain pages. I would bet if I had the iPhone tethered and pulled down a 1M file you would see it come down much better than 2.8x. :laugh2:

The general consensus is that it is being done for battery life.

Well, since my comcast only gives me a 3Mbps line, I can't see 3G doing a 7.2, but I'm sure I'm wrong.

Now to my personal experience... I know Steve Jobs said that the iPhone 3G is a few seconds faster than other 3G phones, but when I had my blackjack, and I'm in the Chicago area, I could never run faster that a 300~400Kbps on most speed tests and to be honest, the average was in the 200 range. I am still going to get the iPhone 3G because my average speed on my current iPhone is 100Kbps, so even an average of 400 with the V2 will still be a great improvement.

Only time will tell.

Can you image the tug on the cell towers with 1 million plus 3G users plus everyone else in an area. I would say AT&T put a cap on 3G.
