    When texting, in iOS 5, when you'd type ;) :) :O etc. they'd be converted into emoticons automatically. This doesn't seem to be the case anymore? through come up as just plain text. Unless I'm missing something, bummer! Maybe recipients need to be on iOS 6 as well?

    through = they. Oops. :)

    And nope. Texting with another iOS 6 user... Typed emoticons still show up as plain text. Bummer.

    Not sure which emoticons you all use. I have emoji free and they always show up as the smily face or which ever one I want. Does the standard keyboard have them?

    Not sure if this is what your asking for but go to:

    Settings, keyboards, Add new, scroll down to emoji and the little globe pops up to the left of the space bar on your keyboard

    Were you on a jailbroken device? This sounds like a jailbreak feature (something I know iRealSMS included). I don't ever remember iOS automatically changing typed emotions into emoji, although it would be a nice feature.
