So if I use iCloud as the default address book account, and for some reason accidentally or purposely delete all my contacts on iCloud, will I lose my address book on my computer? Are those phone numbers not backed up on the actual computer themselves as well as the cloud?

Though I keep a Time Machine backup, I wanted to make sure I have another backup of my contact info, because like you I'm not sure what would happen if the info on iCloud itself was somehow lost. What I did was make an Address Book .abbu (Address Book Archive) file and keep a copy locally as well as one in my gmail account and on Dropbox. Open Address Book to All Contacts, click on a contact and then Command A to Select All. Then go to File>Export>Address Book Archive. Then put the file in a safe place(s).

I urge everyone to keep at least one backup of ALL their files.
