I understand that the unlock is on its way for the 3G. I was wondering are there any advantages to unlocking the phone if you're w/ ATT? I understand there are plenty of advantages to jailbreaking. Im planning on going over to ATT when my contract is up w/ T-Mobile in February.

There would be 0 advantages. Unlocking an iPhone is only good if you want to use it on a different carrier like T-Mobile.

Thats what I thought. Im going over to ATT, because I was going to upgrade to the G1, but I would have to also get the data plan @ $25, and they told me they're going to discontinue the T-Zones. I would end up paying the same If I get an iPhone. (iPhone > g1);)

When your contract is finish with a carrier, they should unlock your iPhone...that's the way my contract are with Telia in Denmark.

If you soft-unlock now - you still have to paid the contract! So at the bottom line, the soft-unlock is only good for people buying an iPhone without any carrier.
