Apple Composite Cable not compatible with iPhone dock

It seems that the pin connections on the docking base included with the iPhone does not pass through some of the signals needed to work with the composite video cable. When the iPhone is docked it cannot see the cable and will not give the option to play videos on the TV.

Connecting the cable directly to the iPhone works just fine.

I'm guessing that the Universal Dock will work fine.

Before anyone asks, the sync and charge still works with the Composite cable.

Why didn't I buy the component cable? Because I'm a cheapskate and don't have HDTV yet.
