I was using Apple Maps on my way home from the mountains today and noticed that after I started using the directions, I lost service for a while. I was expecting the maps to be gone or not working but it was working perfectly fine as if I had service.

Can anyone explain why this is? My guess is that it starts downloading all the data needed for the trip as soon as you ask for directions, but I'm not sure. If this is the case, I don't personally see a need for "offline maps" or "downloadable maps" unless I just don't want to use my data plan.

Hi Josh

I would venture to guess that the map data caches but I could be wrong. I wouldn't make sense for it to just take bits and pieces of map data as you're driving. Furthermore, in order for it to determine an estimate of your ETA it needs to look ahead and see traffic conditions along the route. I also think it would make sense for people that live in an area where cell coverage is spotty, that the data for the trip downloads based on the "FROM" and "TO data points. This is one reason I prefer my Tom Tom app as all map data is on the phone.
