Would somebody advise me please?

I'm with AT&T, recently I added 2 more lines with a total of 3. I asked AT&T to unlock my line ( only one ) because I'm going to my home country in South America, was told my iPhone 5s can't be unlocked. I used to used my unlocked 4s but I don't have it anymore.

My friend in South America told me there are only 4 different kind of frequencies for cell usage and if I knew what frequencies AT&T uses will be able to tell me which carrier to use in my country.

According to him for sure there will be a carrier that will much the same frequencies AT&T uses in my home country, is that true? and, if that is right what is the AT&T frequencies? Thank you : )

1) Just to clarify. AT&T won't unlock the phone. The phone itself certainly can be unlocked.

2) The AT&T iPhones will work fine outside of the US for everything except possibly LTE. Even if LTE doesn't work, HSPDA+ will and that's fairly fast.

The frequencies supported by an AT&T 5s:

  • Model A1533 (GSM)*: UMTS/HSPA+/DC-HSDPA (850, 900, 1700/2100, 1900, 2100 MHz); GSM/EDGE (850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz); LTE (Bands 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 8, 13, 17, 19, 20, 25)

How can the phone be unlocked? I have taking other phones down there but only the unlocked would work with a carrier from my country, unless I kept the sim card from AT&T on it with international service from AT&T costing too much $$$.

Those are the AT&T specs (maybe t-mobile too).

You used to be able to buy an unlock on ebay through "unlock_fusion", but they're not allowed to unlock 5s, so I'm not sure how you get your phone unlocked.

Thank u again. I have a friend who also took her bb torch thought AT&T to my country and couldn't use it there either.

Yes, that was the way I unlocked my iPhone 4S but that is gone : ( BTW I put my sim card from my ip5S to my friend's ip5s t-mobile and for my surprise neither of them worked. I guess t mobile isn't unlocked as I thought.

Today I tried my iPhone 5s with the 3 main carriers in my country and it didn't work. I'm glad I have this 4s unlocked.
