Auto Play for Windows 7

For some reason ever since I updated me and my room mates iPhone 4's to iOS 5, whenever I plug in my iPhone 4 to my laptop, Auto Play pops up (as usual), but this time it lists his name as the device name. (i.e. Richard's iPhone). Even when I plug his iPhone in, it lists Richard's iPhone. How do I change the device name for Auto Play to reflect mine again? (Ed's iPhone)

Are you sure yours is called Ed's iPhone under iTunes? And have you tried renaming it in Windows Explorer?

When it's plugged in and recognized in iTunes, click the device name there and you can change it.

That's the funny part though. Listed as my device name in iTunes is Ed's iPhone. But it's the auto play thats showing a different device name. I did try changing the device name in iTunes to Eddie's iPhone which it changed in iTunes. But it's still showing richard's iPhone as auto play.

Hmm I don't recall syncing after changing the name. I'll give it a shot when I get home and let you know. Thanks

When you open Windows Explorer (as in My Computer), you should be able to see it as "Richard's iPhone" under Devices with Removable Storage, yes? If so, right click it > properties and see if there's an option where you can rename it.

Well its a registry error what u have to do is go to start in the search box type REGEDIT then go to find and in the search box type the persons name that keeps showing up and when it comes up replace it with your name the name may be there more than once so once your done the first name search it again and follow the same steps until it tells u your registry is finished searching then reboot your computer and u should be in businesss

Word to the wise: Regedit can be a VERY dangerous place to go play around in / with. Always do a backup of the registry before you make any changes at all. Not doing so could make your life extremely miserable!

I tried that after the original post and it doesn't work. There is the usual area where you can modify the name, but text entry is disabled. Some searching seems to indicate that a registry hack is the only solution.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions. I never edited anything in REGEDIT, but I am going to try. :)

haha REGEDIT obviously hates me. I edited the device name to Ed's iPhone, restarted my laptop. Richard's iPhone still pops up when I plug it in. I check REGEDIT again, and Richard's iPhone is back as the labels name. I deleted the file that WPDDEVICEHANDLER that lists Richard's iPhone, restarted and it's back. Not sure what I am doing wrong. :(

As Scott (RoofMonkey) said, don't mess around with the registry unless you're a professional because you'll most probably screw things up in the end.

I couldn't locate the name with mikflai81's directions so I googled about changing the device names in the registry and came across this.

Tarek, I am going to plug it in to another pc and see what pops up.
