Thought I'd share this experience with you all:

I wanted to add a second iPhone to my account as a gift for my wife for Christmas. Wanted a white 16G 4s. I have AT&T.

For convenience I go to our local mall's AT&T store, since right above it is an Apple store. So I go to AT&T and talk to my usual guy. I'm not eligible for an upgrade till March so I'm ready to pay the $649 if necessary, but I ask if there's anything he can do for me. He agrees to let me have an 'early upgrade' for $449. Good deal, I'll take it.

So he goes in the back to get it and finds that they just sold the last white one to somone else; plenty of the others, though. Says he can order it. I ask if it's a problem to just go to the Apple store and get once since they say they have plenty in stock. He says, no problem, he put the discount in the system. So off to Apple I go.

Apple store says no problem, got plenty, and produce what I want. We start the process and he says I can only pay the full $649. I tell him the price AT&T quoted and says there's nothing he can do. I thank him and head back downstairs.

I tell the AT&T guy what happened and he tells me they need to do an override and Apple probably can't do it. So I ask how soon I can get one if I order it and he says 'probably tomorrow, two days at the most.' Fine, I order for the $449, and it arrived today, in two days. I have the grandfathered unlimited plan, second iPhone is $24/month for 2GB minus my company discount of 25% which means $18/month. Life is good!

My conclusions: Shortage/availability problems are over for the 4s, at least here in central NY. Both Apple and AT&T stores have their pluses and minuses- Apple has more product and specialists, AT&T has the flexibility to make deals. I've been with AT&T since they were Cellular One back in 1990, and for the most part they've always come through for me. The buying procedure at Apple is amazing- fast, efficient, and hi-tech.

Most of all: It pays to do your research and shop around. Can't wait to see my sweetheart's face on Christmas!:)

Yep, she's very familiar with my iPhones including my 4s, and knows her way around it well. She's always resisted one because "well, that's OK, we don't really need TWO, I'll just live with what I have..." even though she loves what my phone can do. I's gonna be fun!:)
