Last night our waiter tried to take a pic of me and my wife. The light was pretty low. When she took the pic the flash didn't come on making the pic look horrible. I had to manually turn the flash on in order for the pic to look good.

Is this a defect?

Was the flash turned off? Try a hard reboot of the device and see if that helps fix the issue.

I've found that the iPhone 5S tends to seem to "need" the flash less when on auto. Don't know that I agree with that "need", but it doesn't use it as often. :/

We'll if the choice is "auto" or "on", then yeah, I can see it flashing less than every single time, while on auto. /sarcasm

I assume you mean to compare the "auto" between the 5s and the 5, it read different.

The choices are "on" "off" and "auto". My experience is that auto doesn't work well either.

Um...yeah. I suppose if your intent was to be snarky, then you would read it that way. The assumption would be to compare the 5S/5 auto flash.

I'll just leave it "On". That's dumb though.

Same here. I find I have to use my judgment and force flash on. The auto setting does not work well.
