I know that you can prevent the iPhone from locking in the first place, but that means that the screen just stays lit full power and we already know the battery life is crap.

So can I have the phone lock (screen turns off etc.) but when I press the home button I don't have to do the slide to unlock thingy?

I don't know if u can without jailbreaking, but I don't understand why you would want to. 2 years later I still enjoy it everytime.

Nope. You can't do it through jailbreaking either. Sorry.

You can change it to a tap to unlock if you jailbreak. You just tap once anywhere on the bottom portion of the screen. You can also change the slide to answer and slide to power off to taps. It's faster and easier.

is there a "rub to unlock" hack?

or "gently massage to unlock"?

No, but there is a talk dirty to me to unlock ;)
And if you find that the tap to unlock is too sensitive for you, just can just get in the habit of pushing the lock button before putting it in your pocket/purse/man purse/fanny pack etc.

Another note to the OP. If you jailbreak, you can set the phone to never lock and then get a screen dimmer in Cydia. I think you'd be happy with tap to unlock though.
