Do I need to let my battery run most of the way down before recharging?

Nope. Though it isn't bad if you do either. I like to get it get down to around 20-30% every once in a while. But I can also re-charge at 70% or so, too.

will it hurt the battery if it charges fully then sits for the rest of the night ont he charger? im assuming it shuts the charge mode off automatically but just making sure. Sometimes i sleep with it charging.

No worries. Its fine. Did that with my 2G for over a year w/o any negative effect.

Li batteries by nature should be charging when not it use. It is a BAD idea to run them to zero before charging.

Put it in its charger every day.
