Stupid question I'm sure but I don't want to screw this up and lose the photos forever.

My wife's old 3Gs is displaying the "Connect to iTunes" screen. She needs some photos off the phone.

How do I get the phone operating again without losing the photos?

Did she have iCloud or iTunes backups on? If so, she can restore and then apply that the latest backup.

    And if not?

She has no idea on the backup. Not iCloud for sure.

The other thing is, she's had the iPhone 4 for awhile now. What happens when I plug the 3Gs in to the same computer? Will the 2 phones and their respective settings be kept separate?

The photos will be gone if she has to restore it and didn't save them to the computer or use the backup feature.

You can sync multiple devices (each with their own settings) with the same computer without a problem.
