Do the bars indicate voice or data signal strength or both ?

Just curious, I always thought the signal bars indicated voice signal strength not data net strength. I read in another post where someone was looking at bars and saying they had very weak 3g strength because they had one bar.

If the bars do not indicate data net strength, then is there any way to know at a glance what your data strength is short of doing a speed test?

I am pretty sure that the bars indicate the data strength. The more bars the better! WHen I get full service EDGE is decent, only 1 bar, not even worthwhile to be on safari.

I don't know, but what I do know is that I've been in places with 1 bar that has come back with a faster speed test result than places with full bars.

Rwmember you are sharing bandwidth with whoever else is accessing the tower. 5 bars with 50 users will possibly be slower than 1 bar and 5 users.
