Error Message when accessing iTunes Store for activation

So i just got my iPhone and I come home and connect to iTunes, it picks up the iPhone and says "Accessing iTunes Store" -

Then I get an error message that reads - "iTunes could not connect to the iTunes Store. The network connection timed out. Make sure your network settings are correct and your network connection is active, then try again."

I'm not really sure what I need to do to detect and correct the problem, could anyone be of any help?
