Hi, guys I have a mate, moving to the usa for 3 years. He asked me if I could find out the best US mobile carrier is?
I will tell you what he is looking for:

    • a carrier with a strong signal in most places (call/tests signal)
    • Good 3G/4G (if usa have it) Connection
    • good contract
    • cheapish calls/texts to the UK ? (he does have whats app, but not everyone else does)
Also is there any contract that matches near what he has now for roughly the same price, here in the UK he gets this for £25:

    • 2000 mins to any network
    • 5000 3-3 mins (Not applicable)
    • All you can eat data (Really unlimited, NO CAPs)
    • Free tethering
    • Free Voice mail
    • 3000 texts
    Cheers guys

Currently the only nationwide carrier offering true unlimited data is Sprint, the carrier I am on.
Unfortunately, capacity is severely overloaded and many subscribers are experiencing very slow 3G data speeds. Works fine for my family's needs.
They are currently working on fixing the network and rolling out 4G LTE, but likely will not be completed by late 2013.....

sprint does have 4g lte in a few cities already. i would check there website and see if 4g lte is in the city your friend is moving to. if not att also has 4g lte. but i would much rather have sprint 4g lte due to the unlimited everything that sprint offers

Actually AT&T has unlimited everything also but you have to buy it at WalMart. It's called Straight Talk and worked great on my iPhone 4S for only $52 a month (taxes included). I used it for a month for testing.

I tested Sprint against Straight Talk ( AT&T) while tethering in Texas :

New Braunfels : AT&T was faster.
Canyon Lake (just 18 miles away) : Sprint was faster.
    Canton : Sprint was faster.
San Antonio : Sprint was faster
    Tyler : AT&T was faster
    Dallas : Sprint was faster

So you see it all boils down to where your friend is going to be located.

I am in that area now as well.
    I am closer to Baltimore.
There are tons of choices and we have LTE
I use and have been on since day 1 of my Cellular days AT&T (it used to be Cingular)
I really do not know anybody here to ask what they use (just moved here myself)
I believe Cricket and Boost are around as well
    nTelos too
