I don't know how many of you have tried Google Mobile App on the 3GS, but it's a pretty amazing experience. Even over 3G, the voice recognition is remarkably fast and accurate from my testing. You have to be in a relatively quiet environment, but check it out. It feels almost as responsive as Voice Control...

And for those that don't know... go to settings and scroll to the bottom and, for lack of better words, keep trying to scroll further. After several swipes, a "bells and whistles" option will come up with some sweet enhancements. I particularly like opening search results within the app to speed things up. The monkey cracks me up, too!

I was playing around with that today also. It was a pretty cool feature and something I was taken by surprise with.

not sure how the noises work but a cool find
Hold the phone to your ear while it's decoding your voice. That's where you'll hear the monkey or whatever. If it's on wifi, you won't hear much of it! :p

It's just a lot faster... very useably fast.

My default screen on google isn't the voice command screen, it's just a search screen. How do i get back the voice command screen?

Settings, Start Screen, Search.... that's what I'm set to.

Way cool. Except it does not seem to work properly for me. I have screen rotation disabled - which I think is the right setting, but it never beeps when I bring the phone to my ear. I have to push the mike button, then it works.

I'm guessing the "bells and whistles" option is a 3Gs thing? I can't get it on my 3G...
Looking forward to updating to the Gs. I use gmaps ALL the time! Really looking forward to seeing the cost of the TomTom device/app...

I agree...on my v1 I could lift the phone up and do the voice...on the new phone I have to click the voice button on this app.

For kicks, I loaded this app on my old V1. The voice recognition does beep when I lift the phone to my ear (unlike my 3G S). The recognition part is another story. It keeps stopping before I've finished speaking. Maybe there's a setting to adjust this, but I didn't have to do that on my 3G S.

I am a little surprised that it works at all on the V1. The app must be doing all the work rather than VoiceRec hardware in the 3G S. ?

The "lift and speak" feature is a bit sketchy on the 3GS for some reason. Hopefully they'll release an update. The "Bells and Whistles" works on all models... you just have to keep flicking until it appears.

And yes, the app does its thing by uploading your sample to Google's servers for processing, so it has nothing to do with the new hardware. The 3GS just makes it all seem to go much more smoothly, almost as if it were processed locally.
