Google's 'Earth Hour'

If you visit Google today, you'll notice that the page is black, as opposed to the regular white. It's part of an event called 'Earth Hour' in which you are asked to turn out your lights from 8:00 PM to 9:00 PM in your local time zone. It's part of the energy conservation movement.

Oh great! I'm gonna turn on all the a/cs, lights, and both computers! I want to get my share of the extra energy!

Not really. Evidently it was pretty successful. Many major cities turned off their lights tonight.

If 1 million homes turned off one 100 watt bulb for that hour, that's a reduction of 100 million watt-hours. Sounds impressive until you realize that in the next hour the same 1 million homes turned on two 100 watt bulbs to make up for not doing anything in the previous hour.
