Well, so far I get an error on the notification system upon first launch. I don't see any options for notifications in the app or in settings. And some email from Paypal with HTML is not rendering properly and is requiring me to scroll around.

Could you download straight from the App Store on your device or did you have to download and sync?

Do you know if it supports push email?

I pastefired the link in this post from my desktop to the phone and it opened right up in the AppStore. I couldn't find it searching the store on the phone.

The error I'm getting is apparently pretty widespread. The app is supposed to support push notifications but apparently it's not working in its current form.

    On iTunes it states
    - I don't know if that means push, though.

Ugh, finally got it installed without iTunes. Not a good start...

I've just checked the notifications sub-menu and Gmail isn't there. No push ATM.

So what's the benefit of this over mail.app? Slightly modified UI?

Hmm, maybe we need to wait for the next version of the app...

I agree this release doesn't work well at all.

Reminds me of the initial release of the G+ app for iOS. Google has been releasing some seriously buggy stuff in Apple land. Is their Android stuff this bad?

Yeah, the G+ app was awful when it was first released. Still isn't that great now :(

What's the benefit that this app has over the mobile app, I don't see it.

Some don't like or know about the Exchange setup for Google or other push notification services/apps, so to them a free, Google-sanctioned app to get push notifications for their email would be a very good thing. The interface is nice, too, but I think push is where it's at and they've apparently bunged that up something bad for this initial release.
