GPS - Getting offline maps

The iPhone possesses gps capability. When you have wifi or a cellular connection, the phone will access google maps. What about when you do not have wifi or cell reception?
I know you can still get your position via GPS, but can you access any maps offline?
I am in Canada so any US only products do not apply.

No, it will still locate you, but it will just show you in a gray abyss with no bearings on where you are without internet. VERY lame. There used to be a jailbreak app that would let you download all the google maps locally, it was like 4 gigs or something. I remember I went looking for it recently and couldn't find it though...

the funny thing is...once I accessed the compass I tried to find myself in google maps without reception. Wasn't happening
