Is there any way to use it without adding yourself as one of your contacts? I thought that was really dumb, and am considering deleting it if not. I like to keep my phone neat and clean, and this might seem a bit OCD but I don't want myself as one of my contacts.

I have it and used to use it quite a bit. Some friends got me using voxer now.
It is kind of strange you need to add yourself as a contact though in HeyTell.

The texting apps are overrated these days. I mean really? What's the point when we have the old fashioned instant messengers? If you thought that will save bills from carriers, then you are half wrong. Texting apps still use data even through it doesn't go toward your sms plan. The same goes for Voice plan, they go VOIP. We had Google Voice, TextFree, TextPlus, ChatOn, Skype, Whatapps, Kik, LiveProfile...it goes on.

HeyTell isn't really a texting app. It's a walkie talkie type of app. Similar to the Nextel direct connect feature.
