How do I teach Siri who is my girlfriend or sister?

I have tried but she says she cannot find it in contact s, and cannot add it. I have tried putting them in contacts but she still cannot find them.

I have read you can say to Siri "Send a text to my girlfriend" or some such but it does not work.

Adding them in as a nickname works for me.

Is this how you added them in?
Contacts > Name > Edit > Add field > Nickname

@Europa does it make a difference if you have your contact default account set up not with iCloud ?
No. You can add nicknames regardless of the method that you use to sync and backup your contacts.

Or just tell Siri who is who. Works for me.

I have tried putting wife into nickname and Siri does not recognise who my wife is. I have told Siri to my wife, and Siri still does not know my wife is. Despite doing what is recommended above, it just does not seem to work.

Try disabling Siri, do a hard reset, then enable Siri and try again.

That has made I better, but ..... It now knows my sister is Liz Verran, and Liz Verran is in my contacts. If I ask Siri to find Liz Verran she shows the full contacts. But if I ask to text my sister Siri says she has no eddress or phone number for Liz Verran!

First, make sure you've created a contact card for yourself, and one for each person (wife, sister, etc.) in your life that you wish to be able to call (or text, e-mail, etc.) using Siri.

Go to your contacts and select your own contact card, tap on Edit, scroll down to "add related name", pick a relation ("wife", "sister", etc.), then select the [previously created] contact card for that person.

You can "Add Related Name" as many times as necessary for all the people in your life.

Then go to Settings > General > Siri > My Info and make sure your own contact card is selected.

Finally, do a test run to be sure it's working.

Note that you can also create custom labels. If you don't see "girlfriend" in the list of relationships (you shouldn't, unless you previously created it), tap on "Add Custom Label" at the time of contact linking.

Ahah! I was just about to point out that the three labels were Spouse, Manager and Assistant. I shall try that.

Nope, doesn't work. No custom labels available.

Yes, 9.0.2. I have 10 of those missing! I have only 3, spouse, manager, assistant. No custom.

Try turning off contacts for Gmail/Exchange and enabling iCloud contacts.

I don't have any for Gmail or Exchange. I changed Hotmail to ICloud, turned off Hotmail, lost 100 contacts, nothing else. I have recovered the Contacts but otherwise as before.

You won't lose your Hotmail contacts. Start syncing them with iCloud before turning off Hotmail contacts. That will save all of them to iCloud. The labels and Siri problem might be a trade off if you would prefer to stick with Hotmail syncing.

I shall keep fiddling with it hearing all that everyone says. So even though this has not solved it, it has given me some ideas. Thank you all
