Mine will not turn to iMessage, until I set the contact to a iPhone. If it says Mobile beside them. It will stay as a normal Text.

Hmmmm. Thats unusual. I heard of people saying that. I can confirm, at least for me, that isn't the case.

I have people that I iMessage in my contacts and that are not labeled as an iPhone owner.

For me the phone knows automatically if the person I am sending a text to has an iPhone or ipad with iOS5. In that case it sends it as an iMessage automatically.

That's odd.., I loaded iOS5 on my phone and my wife's older 3gs the same day. Sent several messages. But it never changed to iMessage until I changed the contact. Maybe it takes a few messages before the phone knows.
Good to know though. Thanks

If its an iPhone 4 there is a bug, sometimes it can be fixed by turning Imessage off and then turn it back on. That works for some atleast

I have at least one person who randomly gets some of my SMS messages as iMessages and others as Text Messages. I can't figure out what makes the difference. I know I was in a weak signal area when sending at least one that went as a Text Msg, then the next one I sent (without making any changes in settings) went as an iMessage. I have a 3GS, he has a 4.

This happened to me once but other than that one time when I message to somebody with an iPhone or iPad (all on 5.0) seems to work fine as an iMessage. :)

yes if there is weak signal it usually defaults back to SMS. Also if the servers are down or backed up then it goes through as an SMS as well.

I'm getting rid of an old iPad but I want to make sure that my iMessages don't keep going to the iPad. How do I turn off iMessages on this iPad so that when I get rid of all data that it doesn't keep getting my iMessages.

Prior to restoring the iPad, make sure you remove your email address from iMessages. Then disable iMessages altogether. Try to send a message and make sure it fails. Then restore. That's it. :)

How do I get rid of my email address from iMessage? Do I delete it through the settings app and disable it there too?
