I do not like the new iBooks update. What do others think? It's just so plain. The lovely book theme with the physical pages is gone. Wish I hadn't updated it.

It looks like the rest of ios7, at least it matches the rest of the dreadful design.

Are you referring to the iPad or iPhone? You're referring to the layered pages on the edges and 3-dimensional look where the two pages meet, correct? If I remember correctly, that "book pages" theme was never available on the iPhone. I don't have an iPad to check and see if there is an option for that on the iPad. It's possible that it's just optional now on the iPad and flat is the default setting.

That's a good point Europa. Yes I was referring to the the non layered pages and the 3 dimensional look. I prefer to read books on the iPad as opposed to the iPhone. I use the iPhone when it's not convenient to carry the iPad around with me. I'll check the iPad and see if it allows me to select options. Never thought of that.

there are no options.

I just wish Apple would be consistent with all their apps. I realize they have different teams designing each app, but surely they can implement some basic standards.

for example, the buttons in most of their apps match the app icon - Music/calendar is red, podcasts purple, notes yellow, mail/safari blue, pages orange, etc.

But some others just have blue buttons as if they forgot they were trying to differentiate the apps by color - messages, facetime, iBooks, iTunes Store, Numbers...

I'm hoping iOS 8 will bring some UI tweaks to tidy things up, but that's what I was hoping iOS 6 and 7 would do, so... meh. Bigger things to worry about.

So pages in eBooks on the iPad no longer have that 3D look with the latest update?

Depends what you mean by "that 3D look". They do still do the 3D page turn, but there are no embellishments that take up screen space like the binding or the page stacks on the edge.

Im not seeing the 3D page turn. Have tried tweaking settings to no avail. How are you seeing 3D in page turns?

I updated iBooks on my iPhone last night, and I still see the page curl/page turn effect when advancing to the next page.

Just checked my iPhone. Now I have it too. Strange. Didn't change anything and suddenly it's there. Thanks.

My Kindle App is more easily readable than iBooks, even in its new form. Actually, both iBooks as well as Kindle have been freshened , but to me, Kindle still has the edge... Book prices seem quite similar .... . David

Hmmm I checked out a particular book in iBooks last night and the € price on it was about €4 more than what I got the exact same book for in the kindle store. Not the first time I've seen books that little but more expensively priced in iBooks. Maybe it's just me

All of the above is giving me that warm fuzzy feeling re staying predominantly with my Kindle App. I'd guess that at the level of "trashy dime store novels' which I escape into , the price difference isn't noticeable , but I was happier with the Kindle format vs iBooks in iOS 6 too and I think that the new presentations are even more significantly different - making iBooks simply 'plain'... So for certain I'll continue to feed my Amazon habit. The "page turn animation" has to be 'turned on' in. Kindle settings to work, but it's authentically done. :) David

I can see that there is an option to disable the new look and go back to the old theme. It is in the configuration screen. Cheers!

I don't see it. How do you mean the configuration screen? In iPad settings or within the iBooks app itself?
