do they always check if you have an active AT&T plan? i've called Apple a few times and they told me it doesn't matter if the phone is with AT&T or not, i can still send it in for repair if i have Apple warranty, but when i called the store near me, they tell me i need a plan with AT&T.

how was the Apple store visit for you guys?

They need an active iPhone SIM in it because they can't replace them without activation.

The last time I was in the Apple Store there was a guy with an iPhone but did not have the SIM. They basically told him he was out of luck for either repair or replacement unless he could prove it was tied to an active ATT account.

Correct, he is out of luck. Example= the guy found a phone took out the sim and took it to the Apple store to see if they could help with someone elses phone.

The best thing to do is call up and send your phone in via post and they won't even check a thing because they ask you to take your sim card out. It's what I did in Australia, closest Apple store is a 6 hour flight.
