I'm not sure if I am posting this question in the right place or not, but........ How does my iPhone know to send an iMessage or SMS to another phone? I know it sends an iMessage to other iDevices, under most conditions and SMS's to non iDevices, but how does it know which is which? I have looked elsewhere on this forum and the internet but can't seem to find an answer.

When you enable iMessages, you're logged onto Apple's messaging server. It detects other iMessage users when you are in your texting app and it sends it through Apple's server if the the contact has a compatible phone with the feature enabled. Otherwise, it defaults to SMS through the carrier.

Glad I backed out and checked the thread. I was going to post almost the same thing Europa just said :)
