I've lived in an Apple world for some time, iPhone 5, iPad mini, iMessage was great.

I moved to an Android phone, and was forced to disable iMessage on all my devices (iPad, iPhone without a SIM card).

Is it possible to turn iMessage back on to use with an iPad, or iPhone (I don't need SMS capability). Ideally i'd like to utilize iMessage for some chatting, and facetime. My fear is that other iPhone users will start to attempt to contact me by iMessage, and I'll never see it on my Android via SMS.

    Is there a solution?

You can enable iMessages on the iPad and iPhone and add an email address. As long as your phone number isn't showing up in iMessages, it will only work with the email address and shouldn't affect receiving texts from friends with iPhones via SMS on your Android.

what happens if other iOS devices (iPhones) have my email and phone number in their address books? will that break the process?

It shouldn't be a problem as long as your phone number doesn't show up in iMessages.
