I'm in South Korea and my wife is in Florida. I use an app called Text plus. Completely free. So far I had no problems with it.

Btw, the person you are texting doesn't need to have the app.

I just tried texting to a number in Europe and it will not accept it.

A none smartphone, just a regular cellphone, like the one my mom uses, that's what he meant.
