Hello, I'm new here. I just updated a 3GS to iOS 5 last night. It took a while but it finally upgraded. The only problem I have is that it went from 100% charged to 0% overnight without even looking at it. I've been trying to turn push notifications and stuff but it still drains like crazy. Anyone else noticing a big decrease of battery life since upgrade? What are the major things to turn off to make the phone last longer? Can I go back and reinstall previous iOS? Help! Thanks!

Nope. I am seeing no shortened battery life on my iPhone 4 or iPad 1.

This should not be happening - most likely you restored from a bad backup. I would restore and setup as new. If that does not work - you may want to head to Apple to replace the battery....or at least have them do a diagnostic.

I agree I am seeing better battery life on my 3GS.
On that note some suggestions. Double check that locations isn't constantly searching. Check your Email notifications and notifications in general. I also suggest a hard reset. Once a day but certainly after a new iOS. (hold power and home button. Ignore slide to power off. Release when you see Apple signal. Wait 62 seconds. )
Hopefully some of this works and your battery life will increase.

I think for 3GS users, they should restore from brand new when going to iOS5.
Just start fresh bro. All this restoring from back up, theres bound to be issues.

Disagree. Don't think your phone has anything to do with the restoration. I did my 3GS with no problems. I know several 4 users who did have problems. Think it is hit or miss with a new iOS.

I've restored from a backup with each ios5 beta release, and have had no issues.

Location services were staying 100% of the time for me. It was location-based reminders. Check those.

This is my first hour of usage this morning.

Pretty good in my opinion. Not worse by any means. I think an hour of usage for every ten percent is good.

Turned everything off, pretty much, and still drains like crazy. Prob just the battery as stated above.

Regarding restoring as new vs backup... I used to be a staunch "restore as new" guy, especially for x.0 updates. But I've long since been simply restoring my backups without issue. Unless you're doing really crazy things with a jailbreak, there shouldn't be a problem. I've been doing it since 3.0 through multiple jailbreak and stock states.

Okay...after a day with the location based reminders off, my battery could not make it through the day. Nothing that I'm aware of I different in my settings from the old iOS. In the past I take my iPhone off charge at 5:50a and it hits low 30's by 11p. Now it hit 20% at 7p. Battery life is shorter for me on iOS 5.

I was the same so I tried restoring from backup going from 4.x->5.0 and it (oddly) feels faster!

    yes I agree
I had terrible issues with both iPhone 4's and come to find out after loading everything almost all my apps were turned on for location service
have no clue why this happned so I went through all phones and checking Notifications and Locations
That helped but still the Beta did better for my (now son's) phone

My battery life has suffered since the upgrade. I lost about 25% in the day. Location services off help a bit. Wonder if this is fixable?
