iOS 7 icons cannot look this bad, can they?

9to5Mac has seen early versions of iOS 7 beta. Their in-house Photoshop expert has come up with these renderings of iOS 7 icons based upon what they've seen.

All due respect to the guy who quickly put these designs together, but this cannot be representative of iOS 7 icons. If so, we're in trouble.

They look incredibly sparse and honestly, these would be tough to look at on a day in, day out basis.

Are you talking about with the boxes around them, or the actual icon themselves?

Icons themselves. It's entirely too early to judge. Someone who threw a concept together in a day is certainly not going to come close to the mark. I actually favor the move to flat design and have faith that Apple will do a beautiful job simplifying the design of iOS. It's in need of serious refinement and consistency.

So, there is no box? If it's just the art itself with no box then yeah, ugly. They should at least give you the option to change the icons if you want.

If they allow the background to bleed through would look a lot better. I like them if that is allowed, otherwise, no.

I'd actually prefer the icons with no box. Why do we need a box to hold them? That just smacks of more skeuomorphism.

Agreed. Icons with their own shapes would be awesome!

I guess it really doesn't matter to me. I don't have any icons on my homescreen anyways. I just like it to look uniform. That picture isn't, some have a box and some don't.

On my Android phone and when I had a jailbroken iPhone 5 (I'm on 6.1.3 now) my home screen is always blank.

You can leave it blank (other than dock) without jailbreaking.

Thanks. I had forgotten about that since my iPhone 5 is basically a $700 Yahtzee player and WWDC streamer. :D

No doubt, you'll be keeping an eye on today's events in hopes they'll make some major improvements to the Yahtzee player.

Now, I'm actually excited about the changes to iOS! At first I could give a rats *** when I saw the leaks. I thought hey were hidious and I figured Apple would make the new icons look better than these renderings. I grew weary of the renderings and the leaks and the constant yammering about the chages so I stopped reading about them. Made things easier because now, today, with less than an hour for the Keynote here on the East coast, I'm excited. YAY! Ignoring the issue for a little while makes it sweeter when the time comes for the reveal. Now I'm ready for the change!
