I have an iPhone 4s on AT&T but would like to try an Android device.

If I buy one can I simply switch sim cards and jump between the two?

Yeah, but you'll have to pay full cost if you just bought your 4S subsidized from AT&T.

There aren't any Android's using microSIMs, you'll need an adapter to frame to the standard size.

You can purchase a microsim adapter from fleabay for cheap.

Yeah, I know I have to pay full cost, best start searching eBay!

As others have said, you'll need a micro sim adapter.
Personally, I highly recommend going to a store and trying one out right there in the store before making any purchases. You might find you don't like the UI, or find that apps you use a lot on your iPhone are not available for the Android. Be smart about researching before purchasing.

I agree with hawk, unless you can afford it ofcourse. What's the return policy on the Android device you're trying to purchase?
