Hi, im new here.

Went to bed last night and didn't plug in my iPhone like I normally do, so when i woke the battery was empty.
I plugged it in again this morning and waited 10 minutes, checked it and it was asking me to plug into iTunes (recovery mode).
I tried rebooting holding down power button and home button, no luck. Did the same with it plugged into iTunes, also no luck.

iTunes doesn't even recognize its my iPhone, it just has a summary and nothing else.

I really don't want to restore. I have all my music on my phone, that hasn't changed since last year because our hard drive died so if i restore i will have none. I also have lots of pics, apps and videos.

My phone is not jailbreaked, and Im not sure if I want to do that either.

Please help!

Does it have iTunes installed?

If it does, plug the phone in, an error should pop up in iTunes or it might say iPhone in Recovery Mode. If the phone is in Recovery Mode, dowload Tiny Unbrella and use the kick out of recovery feature.

Apple only signs the current firmware version (4.3). However, you can restore to outdated firmware if you have your SHSH (for 4.0.1) backed up. You'll need to change your Hosts file and redirect to Saurik's server first.

You don't have 4.0.1 saved already? It's too late to back up that SHSH. You have to do it while the firmware is current. You can only back up 4.3 right now.

If you don't already have any saved, you'll need to restore to 4.3.

If you don't have any SHSHs saved, you'll need to restore to 4.3. I'm not sure if this will work, but you might be able to kick it out of DFU mode with TinyUmbrella, and then just stay on 4.0. TinyUmbrella has a feature that allows you to kick devices out of recovery mode.

It's too late to save 4.0.1. The signing window closed when 4.0.2 was released. Once the signing window closes, the SHSH can no longer be saved. You can only save 4.3 right now. It won't be of any use right now, but you may need it later on down the road. You have two options; stay on 4.0 or update to 4.3.

Do you mean 4.3?

You can only save the current firmware version SHSH.

If you have a 4.1 SHSH, you can use TinyUmbrella to restore to 4.1.
