It appears the software based unlocking services that have hit the market this week have been reverse engineered, and hitting the 'net today.

http://www.freeiPhoneunlock.com/guide/ is one site with links to software needed and directions.
http://iPhone.unlock.no/ is another site with directions and links

I haven't tried either of these methods (I don't have a burning need for an unlocked phone right now) but wanted to pass this info along to anyone that might need it.

It appears it is NOT upgrade proof, but there are some caveats to that statement. Basically, Apple will be able to relock it on us at this point, but I'm sure once they do, the unlock will be updated shortly.

You can really brick your iPhone ( happened to me )

I used this TUT

http://iPhone.unlock.no/

and was able to Unlock my 1st iPhone (already activated on ATT) no problem

I tried a 2nd iPhone brand new iPhone (not activated)
and I bricked it Endless Reboot
but was able to fix that ( old iTunes 7.3...)and Unlock it

Free at last Free ATT last

I used the instructions from http://iPhone.unlock.no/ to unlock my phone last night. It's definitely not for the average user; a couple of things didn't exactly work as described but I understand what this is doing so I adapted.

I'd say if you read it and think it's over your head, you should wait until someone packages the process better.
