Is anyone with a 3G being offered $399/$499 for 3G S?

I have a 3G and I was excited to get the 3G S for $399. But when I went to Apple.com to preorder it, they would only offer the $599 price. At first I thought it was a mistake, but then I realized that the early upgrade pricing ($399/$499) is probably only offered to those at least one year into their contracts, which is no one who has a 3G since we got our phones on July 11th, 2008 or later.

Unless, I'm missing something here.... Has anyone who got their 3G new and subsidized from AT&T been offered the $399/$499 price point?

Yup, bought my 3G on July 12th last year and I paid $499 for my 32 gig last Monday. I've heard of people having this problem too, but usually it's people with joint accounts where someone on the plan bought a phone more recent than last July. Otherwise, I have no clue why it's different for some people.

Hmm. So can someone confirm that I in fact have been deluding myself into thinking that others who got a subsidized 3G have been being offered $399/$499 while I haven't?

I have had my 3G for only 6 months and had the $399/$499 options. However I am on a premier account with AT&T so that is probably the reason.

I'm on a family plan and I'm the primary. My husband is the secondary. He can have a full discount on December 16, 2009. I can have the full discount on July 16th, 2009. I will be paying $299 for the 32G 3GS on July 17th, that's the date I will go and pick this bad boy up! My husband has to pay $499 on an early upgrade 32G 3GS on July 17th.

We pay over $100 a month, actually only a little over $200 @ $205 or @200.75 and I was told that my line pays the most at over $100 per month so I get the full discount a year later, he can only have the Early Upgrade a year later, but in December he can get the full discount. He's not waiting. He's going to get the Early Upgrade.

I have a regular account. I was offered $399/$499. And I took the offer.

For those waiting until July 17 to order, I understand that initial demand was way more than expected and that because of memory chip shortages more 3GS units are not expected for 6-8 months after the initial manufacturing order is sold out. Which looks like will be within a couple of weeks.

Try calling AT&T or Apple, I have heard that calling them can sometimes get the price lowered. Just ask if you can get the lower price or you wondered why you have to pay so much. Their eligibility system is automatic and looks at things like how much you pay monthly and when you last upgraded, but if they feel you pay enough and it's been long enough they might give you the lower price. They might even feel you qualify for the full $199/$299 subsidy. No guarantees but it's worth a try.

I have a premier account, I pay over $100 a month, never had a late bill, had 3G since July 11, and they are trying to charge me $599. I asked them why and they told me that it's not up to them, it's up to the computer making decisions for them as to who should be eligible. This company seriously pisses me off sometimes...

call me crazy but I had the 3g and was offered 499/599 as well. So the AT&T lady said i could add a line for 9.99 and when I activate the phone, cancel the entire plan so it just sits on my bill as 9.99. So I added a line and will transfer my sim to the new phone and cancel the data plan associated with the new phone

I also get the early discounts of $399/$499. I am on a family plan and I will be able t get the full discount July 11th, so that's when I'll get it. I have two lines on my account, one of which was opened very recently (two months), but that one will be able to upgrade in December 2010.

I am guessing you called AT&T? Maybe try Apple since they don't care about it as much. I heard people have called and the reps told them they felt they should get the better price and let them. I don't remember if that was AT&T or Apple they called, but I would figure Apple has better customer service.

Oh and you are more than qualified to get at least the early upgrade price.
