Is it really worth upgrading to the new 3GS from the V1?
Will I be charged an extra free to upgrade?
Do I have to extend my contract?
Are the data plans more expensive?

Haha, sorry for all the questions. I can't seem to make up my mind if it is worth it or not since I held out on the 3G upgrade too and was just fine.

1) I think it is, I'm upgrading from a 3G
2) You will be charged an 18 dollar upgrade charge, on your AT&T bill
3) You do not have to, but the device will be significantly more expensive. 199 and 299 w/2yr contract, 599 and 699 for commitment free pricing.
4)Data plan is the same as 3G 30 dollars a month and is required.

1.If you like all the features and want a better phone, it's worth it.

2.Other than the $18 fee that seems to be appearing, there shouldn't be a whole lot.

3. The subsidized prices ($199/$299) are with a 2-year contract, so you will need to either accept this contract or pay a whole lot more.

4. I believe that the 3GS unlimited data plan is around $30, so yes, it will be more expensive than the V1 data plan ($20), but I don't think it's more than the 3G.

Do I have to extend my contract? Yes for 2 years
Are the data plans more expensive? V1 is $20(200 texts) the 3GS is $30(no texts)

As someone who is upgrading from V1 to 3GS...

1) Yes, it is worth it. You're talking about a phone 3X as fast as the one you are using now (2X as fast as the current 3G), you get better service, MMS, bluetooth headset capability, GPS, etc.
2) Yes, $18, apparently.
3) Yes, two years. This is what subsidizes the cost of the new phone.
4) Yes.

I currently pay $30/month for the V1 iPhone Data + 1,500 texts.

I will have to pay $30/month for the 3GS iPhone Data + $15 for 1,500 texts.

So while people claim it is only $10 more to to from V1 to 3G, it is actually $15 more per month. Even if you only wanted 200 texts, you'd be paying $20 for V1 and then $35 for 3GS plus 200 texts.

$180 more per year, $360 more over the life of your deal.

So to upgrade, your costs over two years are:

$199 (or $299) for the phone
$360 more for service
$18 for upgrade fee
$30 for a case (just throwing this in there)
-----
$607 plus tax.

You can't keep your old data plan with the 3G or the 3G S, both require the 30 dollar data plan.

Not true, if you upgrade to the new 3GS, you'll be locked in on the new data plan regardless. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

If your a V1 owner, I would definetely recommend the upgrade. Your looking at getting a phone that will be at least 3X faster than your current model, and will be able to take advantage of all of the features that will be offered. Now, whether you want to sign a new agreement, that is going to be your personal choice.

IMHO, V1 owners will get the greatest benefit of upgrading to the 3Gs. I have the 3G and will not be getting the new phone because for me, it doesn't have that many new features to justify the cost. Even if I could get it at the subsidized price, I don't think I would. 3.0 will give me all I need.

v1 owners have the greatest benefit in upgrading, sure. But IF a whole new model comes out next year, we're going to be stuck not being able to subsidize. v1 owners like myself SEEM to be stuck on a cycle where we're never getting the newest model, just the newest upgrade of the model...if you know what I mean...not sure if that's a good or bad thing.

thanks for all the opinion guys. i would definitely upgrade if it was only $199 for me, but that big price tag of 499 is definitely scaring me.

I said I wasn't going to upgrade from my v1 because its still in perfect condition but the more I think about it, I think I really want the new 3Gs.
I think I'm going to try talk my husband into selling his & selling mine. He'll get a cheap phone & I'll upgrade to the 3gs:p

This is another reason why I don't want to upgrade. I have a feeling next year they'll come out with a new design of the phone. Maybe I'll just wait since there's nothing wrong w/my v1 <knocks on wood>
