Is the O2 (UK) Pay&Go iPhone unlocked?

A friend just bought one yesterday at the Regent Street Apple Store and he is now worried as he was going to bring it back to Malaysia to use. If the phone is locked, he may have to sell it off before he leaves.

Since this prepaid plan iPhone is unsubsidized by O2, is it an unlocked version?

Thanks!

Any idea whether O2 will unlock it for a fee like in Australia? Over there, the carrier will unlock the iPhone for a fee of $80 for prepaid and free unlock for postpaid.

Yes, I believe they are obliged to by law in the UK - after 12 months.

Even though this is a PAYG phone it is still a contract of sorts.
