Are you by chance using Windows 64 bit version?

Have you checked for viruses or malicious software? It may be stuff on your PC that's causing the problem, not the iPhone.

What about Apple's on-line help? Maybe there are drivers you need to download?

Solution.

you need to make sure file called iTunesMobileDevice.dll is in this folder

C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\bin

during your steps to mod you probably moved this file instead of copy and pasting it. Just search your computer for iTunesMobileDevice.dll (or navigate to the folder on your computer where it is located), copy it, then paste it in the above directory and you should be good to go. (I initially made this same mistake and got this same error).

Uh... this was a user error, not Windows.
