The black phone situation out there is getting more confusing by the minute. In this post, I endeavor to help you maintain a confusion-free status as far as all these black phones go.

There are three "black" Smartphones and they share little more in common than the word "black" is part of all of their names.

BlackBerry phones, manufactured by BlackBerry Limited, formerly known as Research In Motion Limited (RIM). This is the company famous for bringing us some of the most wildly-successful smartphones of 2014, including the uniquely-shaped BlackBerry Passport. Thanks to its innovative square shape, this phone is perfectly immune to bending in your back pocket—simply because its special shape makes it impossible to cram into your back pocket. Blackberry Limited currently sells 14 different Blackberry models.

Then there is the Blackphone, a phone built with extreme levels of privacy in mind. It is a Smartphone developed by SGP Technologies, SA, which is a joint venture between Spanish device maker Geeksphone, and Silent Circle, a firm that includes PGP (Pretty Good Privacy*) creator Phil Zimmerman. You can learn more about this smartphone at the Blackphone Project website.

*Pretty Good Privacy—that is really assuring for a phone that aims to provide the absolute best levels of privacy available today.

Finally, we have the "Boeing Black" Smartphone designed by Boeing and Blackberry, although it doesn't run BlackBerry OS, it runs Android(!) Seriously, I'm not making this up. This one is "still a mystery," according to an article on The Verge.
