im planning to buy my girlfriend an unlocked iPhone for christmas, and have a few questions.
1. should i buy off of ebay? and risk getting a brick.
2. or unlock it myself?

is it easy to do and if i buy one off the shelf have they already been upgraded to 1.1.2? and do i need to have At&T service to even unlock or just the sim card( i don't want AT&T)
i have looked around and have found conflicting stories about how to unlock, and which versions are unlockable, she has Tmobile if that makes a difference.

if someone could help me that would be sweet!

I bought a new v1.1.2 iPhone off ebay and bought a guide to unlock it.

I found the guide here www.iphone-unlock.us

It did take almost 2 hours but in the end it worked.

What you bought on ebay was an old phone that had been upgraded to 1.1.2

Correct!

Please don't come on here shouting the odd before you know all the facts. The new out of box phones from 02 and new AT&T US Phones have a new boot loader (which is hardware just to be clear) which cannot currently be unlocked.
