On today's MacWorld post of 15 items wanted on iPhone one of the editors makes the statement, "now that iPhone all mass delete of mail..." I am unaware of this ability. Yes, that can be done on the Trash list, but not on the new list.
Does anyone know if he is wrong or I am?

As far as I know, this is still not possible. You can do it in your trash, but not in your inbox. Unless I have missed it completely, as well.

No, you are correct. Unless something comes out of tomorrows announcement, the trash is the only way to mass delete.

Maybe that post was referring to the post-2.0 ability to select multiple emails for deletion. Not "mass" but "multiple" at least.
