Not going to affect anything on your contract. Jailbreak means that you'll be able to install third party apps on your phone, it has nothing to do with the service provider.

You should be fine connecting to iTunes just make sure that you do NOT choose to update the firmware without first doing a restore to factory settings. This can possibly mess up your iPhone and make it very bothersome to fix. Though, we won't have a new firmware until June at the earliest.

You should look at this thread. It explains the pros and cons of jailbreaking and how to do it.

Jailbreak

Wow...way to complicated for what it is.

Jailbreak=
1, Backup contacts & calendar with PC or MAC.
2, Update to 1.1.4 (stop iTunes from syncing when finished)
3, Close iTunes
4, Download ZiPhone 3.0
5, Select the "Jailbreak" button
6, 60 seconds later you are Jailbroken
7, Done...
