Hi,

I'm not familiar enough with the activation procedure, and so was hoping somebody could advise.

On a new store-purchased (in the UK, Pay as you go) iPhone 3G, is it possible using iTunes to specify which firmware updates to install (so as to only go as far as 2.1 and be able to use the soft unlock due next week), or does it automatically install the latest as part of activation (2.2)? If the latter, is there any workaround?

Regards

I am fairly sure (you should seek confirmation though) that activation will NOT impose latest (or any) firmware on you. It will just establish carrier network / service. iTunes should always prompt you as to whether you want to update your firmware.

As for the last part of your query, the only workaround if you did go to 2.2 would be to have an .ipsw file (all firmware files carry that extension) of the earlier firmware you need available on your machine and do a custom restore, selecting that file - but I'm not certain if that's even still do-able with 2.2 ...

Oh, and welcome to EIC - you'll like it here
