Many iPhone buyers are switchers

Twenty-five percent of cellphone users who bought Apple (AAPL) iPhones on the first go-round were "switchers" to AT&T (T) from another carrier, according to a report issued today by American Technology Research.

A separate survey of 200 iPhone customers conducted by Santa Monica-based Interpret and reported in USA Today found an even higher percentage of switchers: just over 50%. Of those who changed carriers to buy an iPhone, Interpret's numbers show, 35% paid an average of $167 to break a contract.
