I don't get this move by Apple. People are all in a lather over the gold iPhone 5s. I can understand the lack of Touch ID. That has its own issues with supplies, costs, etc. Gold is a color and super popular.

Anyone venture to guess why they didn't go gold?

Maybe they did it so their flagship device would have the exclusive "gold" status?

Availability of the color from the manufacturer? The iPhones are hard enough to get in gold now as it is.

The anodizing process might be more difficult. I'm not sure why it would be, but I can't think of any other reason as to why the gold 5s is so hard to get. This is going to make the gold phone even more sought after now. I was really hoping for a gold mini with Retina since I couldn't get a gold phone at launch.

Because the iPhone is a smaller device. I think it looks good because there isn't a lot of aluminium. The iPads have a huge area of aluminium. A huge golden iPad would look pants IMO.
I knew you meant bad from context, but I hadn't heard that one so I Goggled it.

"Pants

This word can have two meanings if you are from the UK. It either means

1. The British word for panties, underpants, etc
2. Rubbish, bad"
