Hi and thanks very much in advance for your help. If this is in the wrong section, I apologize.

I have a jailbroken iPhone 3GS running iOS version 4.3.3.

I want to update my firmware to 5.1.1 ideally but I wouldn't mind an earlier version as long as it's 5.x.x.

This is not the first time I jailbreak a device, but this time I encountered some obstacles since my Sleep/Wake button is broken.

I wonder where it went wrong.

Here are the steps I've taken:

    1- I've downloaded the original 5.1.1 firmware from getios.com
2- I've created a custom ipsw with redsnow to preserve baseband
3- I've created a DFU ipsw with redsnow in order to enter DFU mode. I've used the original 5.1.1 firmware from getios (from what I understood, any firmware would do, this step is just to enter into DFU mode, but maybe that's where I screwed up)
4- I've pressed alt+restore in iTunes and loaded the DFU ipsw.

At that point, my iPhone's screen turns black, then there is an image of a USB cable, then the Apple logo comes back on, then I get a message saying "Not Eligible for Rebuild", and then my phone starts up normally (at least it didn't break the phone!)

Could anyone explain to me what I did wrong? Please bear in mind that I am not really technically-inclined, this is probably the most complicated tech thing I've done haha.

    Again, thanks a lot!

When I open Cydia, the homepage says that I have the 5.1.1 SHSH blobs but I don't know where to go from there...

    1- Open redsn0w
    2- click Extras
    3- click SHSH blobs
    4- click Stitch
5- click IPSW ((here you will navigate to your correct firmware for 3GS firmware 5.1.1))
6- click Cydia ((your SHSH blobs will be stitched to the firmware))

Once your IPSW has been built, use iTunes to restore...Good luck

In step 5, when you say to stitch the blobs to the "correct firmware", you mean the stock (original) ipsw from Apple?

Shouldn't it be either the custom ipsw (with preserved baseband) or even the DFU ipsw (so I can enter DFU mode)?

Thanks a lot for your help!

Ok use the DFU ipsw to enter DFU mode.... are you preserving baseband for unlock..? if yes I would suggest you use sn0wbreeze v2.9.6... really straight forward...will work first time...

If you use redsn0w method you will get an error -1 ..... just use redsn0ws "Recovery Fix" in "Extras" to fix the problem....

So I used the stock ipsw from Apple to create a DFU ipsw. Then I stitched the blobs that DFU ipsw and restored from that stitched DFU ipsw, but it didn't work.

I also used the stock ipsw from Apple and stitched the blobs to it to create a stitched ipsw. Then I created a DFU ipsw from that stitched DFU ipsw to create a DFU stitched ipsw, as opposed to a stitched DFU ipsw. It didn't work either...

Now my iPhone is in recovery mode and in order to use the recovery fix in redsn0w, I need to enter DFU ipsw which I can't do manually.

I guess I'm stock with 4.3.3 until there's an untethered 6.0 jailbreak available...

    No...
    You are building 2 ipsw
One for DFU mode and a custom IPSW to restore to 5.1.1.
    Use sn0wbreeze.. Good night.

ALWAYS USE ORIGINAL FIRWARE WHENEVER YOU BUILD A CUSTOM IPSW

The object is to build 2 separate IPSW files... first one to get you into DFU mode and the second will downgrade you to 5.1.1 firmware....
You will need a copy of stock/original firmware for an iPhone 3GS on 5.1.1 downloaded to your desktop.
    DFU IPSW
Use redsn0w(in Extras) to create your dfu firmware....

    Custom 5.1.1 IPSW
    1- Open redsn0w
    2- click Extras
    3- click SHSH blobs
    4- click Stitch
5- click IPSW ((here you will navigate to your correct firmware for 3GS firmware 5.1.1))
6- click Cydia ((your SHSH blobs will be stitched to the firmware))
Your stitched firmware on 5.1.1 will be created.. ready for a restore.

You should now have 2 IPSW files
Using iTunes select the DFU ipsw(this method is used because th OP has a faulty power button) file and install.... your iPhone should now be in DFU mode..

Again using iTunes select your custom built 5.1.1 firmware and install..

You may get an error -1 at the end of the process...just use redsn0ws "Recovery Fix" found in Extras to complete the downgrade..

I encounter a few problems when following the steps.

DFU ipsw: No problem I can create it

Custom ipsw: step 3: redsnow 0.9.12b1 says that it can only restore A5 devices or newer and that I have to stitch

So I stitched the blobs following the stitch method.

Now when using iTunes I select the DFU ipsw, it doesn't enter DFU mode, instead, I get error message "Device Not Eligible"....

I figured that would help, and I downloaded the latest version 0.9.14b2, but same problem.

Got to get into DFU mode.... Just recently restored to 5.1.1 via sn0wbreeze.... so decided to restore again using the method outlined... created DFU ipsw and a custom 5.1.1 ipsw with stitched SHSH blobs... yup worked ok first time for me....
